
Pokhara to Jomsom: Twenty Minutes Over the World's Deepest Gorge

A 20-minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom threads the Kali Gandaki gorge between two 8000-metre peaks. What makes it remarkable, and why it gets cancelled.
Pokhara sits at 822 m. Jomsom is at 2,743 m. Between them lie 130 km as the crow flies, but that straight line cuts through the Kali Gandaki valley — the deepest gorge on the planet, measured from river level to the surrounding summits of Annapurna I (8,091 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m). By road the distance is barely coverable in a day: the Beni–Tatopani–Ghasa switchbacks take 8–10 hours by jeep in the dry season and twice as long after rain. A plane covers it in 20–25 minutes.
The route has been in service since the 1980s. Today it is operated by two or three Nepali carriers (Tara Air, Summit Air, and historically Yeti Airlines until 2023) flying Twin Otter DHC-6 and Dornier 228 turboprops — 19-seat aircraft capable of taking off and landing on short high-altitude strips. Jomsom Airport (code VNJS / JMO) is a 740 m paved runway on the floor of the gorge, with an approach strictly from the south and departure strictly to the north. There is no approach from the other side: the Dhaulagiri massif stands to the north.
Why Only in the Morning
The Kali Gandaki acts as a natural aerodynamic funnel. By midday the temperature differential between lower Pokhara and the sun-heated Mustang plateau drives wind through the gorge to 40–60 knots from the south. The crosswind component at VNJS during those hours exceeds the Twin Otter's certification limit (approximately 25 knots), and the airfield ceases operations. All commercial flights are therefore scheduled between 06:30 and 10:30; after a delay of ninety minutes or so, a flight is typically cancelled for the entire day rather than rescheduled for the evening.
In practical terms this means: if your itinerary includes a connection through Pokhara, build in a full day's buffer in each direction. A Jomsom cancellation is not an anomaly — it is part of the region's weather pattern. In winter (December–February) the cancellation rate rises due to cloud cover at the southern entrance to the valley; during the monsoon (June–August) flights are cancelled on roughly half of all days.
What You See from the Window
On the left side (flying north): the Annapurna wall — first Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) with its distinctive twin summit, closed to climbing by decision of the Nepali government, then Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Annapurna I itself — the first eight-thousander ever climbed by humans (Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, June 1950). On the right side: the Dhaulagiri massif, the seventh-highest peak in the world.
The aircraft flies at 3,500–4,000 m — that is, below the surrounding summits. This is not an optical illusion or marketing: the mountains on both sides genuinely rise 4–4.5 km above the flight level. Some pilots open the cockpit door, and passengers in the first row see the pilot's direct view ahead — instrument panel, slopes on either side, runway in front. This does not happen on most flights in the world.
Shooting in flight is difficult. The windows are scratched, the turbulence is noticeable, and the light changes every 30 seconds as the aircraft passes between the slopes. If photography matters to you, ask at check-in for a seat in the first or second row on the left side; the crew usually accommodates this.
The Alternative — Jeep, and Why That Works Too
Since 2017 the Beni–Jomsom road has been passable for four-wheel-drive vehicles. It is 165 km of dirt track along the river, 8–14 hours each way, with lunch in Tatopani and the Rupse waterfall en route. Some of our clients choose the plane one way and the jeep the other — particularly those who are uneasy in light 19-seat aircraft. The jeep is slower but allows stops at the hot springs and in villages that the flight route simply bypasses.
Safety: What Is Worth Knowing
High-altitude flights in Nepal have a failure rate above the global average. Since 2010 several accidents have occurred in the Annapurna valleys and at Lukla — the most widely known near Pokhara in January 2023, which claimed 72 lives (ATR 72, Yeti Airlines; cause — crew error on approach to the new airport). The Pokhara–Jomsom route itself is short and visually straightforward during daylight, but statistically Nepal remains a jurisdiction with elevated risk — the European Union has kept Nepali carriers on its safety blacklist since 2013.
In our practice we:
fly only on morning departures with confirmed weather;
build a buffer day into the schedule after the flight and before the flight;
prefer Tara Air and Summit Air as operators with more transparent incident reporting;
do not advocate for the plane where a jeep solves the problem — for short treks from Kagbeni, for example, the difference in experience does not justify the risk.
In Brief
Pokhara–Jomsom is the most beautiful 20-minute flight in the Himalayas. It is also a flight that is cancelled on half of all monsoon days and a third of winter days. If it is in your programme, build slack into your schedule and treat it as a weather window, not a timetable. The plane will get you there. The question is which day.
