
Electric Plugs and Sockets in Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet

Which adapters to pack, what happens to charging above 4000 metres, and why Bhutan uses Indian sockets while Tibet uses Chinese ones. A practical guide.
What to Know Before You Leave
Electricity in the Himalayas is neither a surprise nor a disaster, but it is not "like home" either. Each of the three countries has its own socket standards, its own grid reliability, and its own pattern of outages. If you are traveling for 10–20 days, charging confusion alone will not derail your trip; but a dead navigation device on day seven of a trek is a more serious matter than it seems back in your city.
This is a practical breakdown: which adapter works where, what to bring, what not to buy locally, and why a power bank matters more in the Himalayas than you might think.
Nepal: 230 V, 50 Hz, Three Socket Types
Standard voltage is 230 volts at 50 hertz. This is compatible with European, Russian, and most Asian devices. Do not plug American 110-volt appliances into these sockets without a voltage converter: 220 volts into a 110-volt circuit board means the smell of burning.
Nepal has three socket types, sometimes all in the same outlet:
Type C — the European two-pin plug, the same as in Moscow or Berlin. Most common in hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Type D — the Indian three-pin plug with thick round contacts. A legacy of colonial-era electrical equipment; found in older hotel sections and lodges.
Type M — an enlarged version of D with even thicker pins. Less common in Nepal, but encountered in mountain guesthouses.
A universal "all-in-one" travel adapter handles all three cases. It costs around 800–1,500 rubles in Moscow or about $5–8 in Thamel, but locally sold adapters are inconsistent in quality. Bring your own.
A separate issue is power cuts. In Kathmandu they have become rare since the Upper Tamakoshi project came online in 2021, but outside the capital they still happen: 1–4 hours per day, with no schedule. On trek, lodges have electricity but often only in the evening from 18:00 to 22:00, when the micro-hydro plant or diesel generator is running. Charging in that window means queuing at a power strip shared among twenty people, with six devices plugged in.
Bhutan: 230 V, Same Grid as India
Bhutan is historically linked to India's power system and actually sells some electricity back to India (the country is a net exporter of hydropower). Voltage: 230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are mainly two types:
Type D — the primary socket, Indian standard.
Type F — European Schuko, in newer hotels of three stars and above.
The grid in the Paro Valley and Thimphu is stable. On Bhutan's mountain treks (Druk Path, Jomolhari) there is no mains electricity at all — only diesel generators at the camps, switched on for 2–3 hours in the evening. A Type D adapter plus a power bank is the standard kit.
Tibet: 220 V, Chinese Sockets
Tibet is administratively part of China, so the standard is Chinese: 220 V, 50 Hz. Sockets:
Type A — flat two-pin American-style (no earth).
Type I — Australian-style, three flat contacts.
Type C — European two-pin, in newer hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse.
A universal adapter covers all options again. On the Darchen–Dirapuk–Zutulpuk section (the kora around Kailash), the monastery guesthouses have no electricity or only intermittent power from solar panels. Dinner by butter lamp.
What Happens to Your Devices Above 4,000 Meters
Three practical problems the shops never mention:
Lithium batteries drain faster in the cold. At −5 °C capacity drops 20–30%; at −15 °C, up to 50%. A phone left overnight by a guesthouse window in Dirapuk will show 12% in the morning instead of the 80% it had at bedtime. Solution: sleep with your phone and power bank inside your sleeping bag's inner pocket.
Cameras drain even faster, especially DSLRs and mirrorless cameras with electronic viewfinders. Carry 2–3 spare batteries and keep them in an inner chest pocket.
Charging power is unstable. Guesthouses run on solar panels or small micro-hydro turbines. Voltage fluctuates — from 180 to 250 V. Sensitive electronics (laptop, professional camera) are at risk. If you need a laptop on the trip, bring a power bank with a 65–100 W PD output, charge from the power bank, and recharge the power bank from the mains.
What to Pack
Minimum kit for 14–20 days in the Himalayas:
Universal adapter covering types A, C, D, F, I (one per person).
Power bank 10,000–20,000 mAh — preferably two smaller ones rather than one large one (one in your pocket, one charging).
USB cables with a spare: one in the main pack, one in the day bag.
Headlamp with spare AAA batteries — for power cuts and early-morning starts.
USB-C to Lightning adapter if you have an iPhone and your laptop cables are all Type-C.
What not to bring: an adapter bought "on the spot" (quality is a lottery), a hair dryer (most lodges lack the power capacity), a multi-socket extension cord (pointless — the room often has one outlet and it is occupied by the lamp).
Connectivity and Internet — A Separate Topic
In Nepal, Wi-Fi is available in hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara; on trek it is weak or absent. In Bhutan, Wi-Fi is slow but widespread. In Tibet, WhatsApp, Telegram, Google, Facebook, and Instagram are blocked. You need a VPN installed before entering China (VPN websites are also blocked in Tibet, so downloading one locally is not possible). If your trip passes through Lhasa, install 1.1.1.1 or Mullvad beforehand.
