About this route
Upper Mustang is a restricted mountain district in northern Nepal, bordering the Tibetan plateau. Until 1992 foreigners were barred from entry; since 1992 a restricted regime has applied, under which each group obtains a special permit — $500 per person for the first 10 days and $50 for each additional day, issued only through a registered Nepali tour-operator entity. This is the core of the DMC logic: without a local licence, you do not get in.
We are Nira Travels Pvt Ltd, a licensed Nepali tour operator (registered with Nepal's Ministry of Tourism — number issued 2018, confirmable on request). We provide DMC service across Upper Mustang for foreign partners: tour operators, MICE agencies, corporate programmes, boutique retreat brands. You sell to the end client under your own brand; we handle everything between the permit and the return flight from Pokhara — permits, guides, transport, lodges, meals, medical backup, and evacuation logistics.
The route is 14 days, a loop: Jomsom → Kagbeni → Chuksang → Samar → Geling → Ghami → Tsarang → Lo Manthang → return to Jomsom → Pokhara → Kathmandu. Altitudes range from 2,800 to 3,840 m, there are no technical sections, walking is 4–8 hours per day, and nights are in guesthouses and lodges. This is not a high-altitude trek in the sense of Kailash or EBC — altitude sickness is rarely a factor below 4,000 m. The main operational challenges here are different: the permit chain, remoteness (evacuation from Lo Manthang means 4–6 hours to Jomsom plus a flight or a long jeep transfer), jeep logistics on a seasonal road, and cultural sensitivity — Lo Manthang remains a living capital with a functioning royal palace, 14th–15th-century monasteries, and a community of around 600 people.
We don't build marketing mysticism around Mustang — there is a consumer product for that. In DMC mode we talk about SLAs, margin, documentation, the responsibilities of each side, and customisation formats. The sections that follow are operational.
Day by day
- Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu
1,400 m
Meet at Tribhuvan Airport — DMC representative with a named placard and confirmed partner voucher. Transfer to hotel in Thamel or another area according to the programme budget (three price categories). Briefing with the partner's tour leader; handover of the group document package: permit copies, insurance confirmations, 24/7 contact list, medical questionnaires for participants to sign.
- Day 2
Kathmandu: operational preparation
1,400 m
Morning — finalising TIMS cards and processing the restricted-area permit for Mustang under our licence. Documents are prepared within 24–48 hours; the group supplies passports plus two 4×6 cm photographs. Simultaneously — a sightseeing programme for the group (Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath — three UNESCO sites), or optionally a free day for acclimatisation after the flight. Evening — final group route briefing.
- Day 3
Kathmandu → Pokhara → jeep to Kagbeni
2,800 m
Morning flight with Yeti / Buddha Air to Pokhara (~25 min), connecting to the short flight to Jomsom (~20 min, operated only before 11 a.m. due to the wind window in the Kali Gandaki valley). From Jomsom — jeep transfer to Kagbeni (~1 hour, 12 km), the historic gateway to Upper Mustang. Permit check at the Kagbeni checkpoint. Accommodation in a lodge; visit to Khag Chod Thubten Monastery (founded 1429).
Alternative for premium programmes: helicopter transfer Pokhara → Jomsom ($2,400–3,200 per aircraft for 4–5 passengers) — eliminates the risk of flight cancellation due to wind.
- Day 4
Kagbeni → Muktinath temple complex
3,760 m4 h on trail
Jeep drive 4 hours to the Muktinath temple complex — a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. 108 water spouts around the perimeter of the Vishnu temple; the eternal flame of Jwala Mata; Jain and Buddhist monasteries within a single complex. Altitude 3760 m — the group's first night above 3500 m; the programme includes an early dinner and a health check.
- Day 5
Muktinath → Gyula pass → Chhuksang
3,000 m7 h on trail
Trek 6–7 hours, 16 km. Gyula La pass (3680 m) — a short ascent from Muktinath, then descent into the Kali Gandaki valley. The landscape shifts to high-altitude desert: erosion formations, red-ochre cliffs, sparse villages along the old salt-trade route. Night stop in Chuksang.
- Day 6
Chhuksang → Samar
3,600 m6 h on trail
Trek 6 hours, 15 km. The path passes through the village of Chele and climbs by switchbacks onto the plateau. Samar — a small settlement of eight houses and one monastery, a traditional halt on the trade route to Tibet.
- Day 7
Samar → Chungsi cave → Ghiling
3,820 m7 h on trail
Trek 7 hours, 12 km. Along the way — Chungsi Cave, one of four sites in Mustang where, according to Tibetan tradition, Padmasambhava meditated (8th century). The frescoes inside the cave date to the 13th–14th centuries; their state of preservation is moderate. Ghiling — a village with an active monastery of the Sakya school.
- Day 8
Ghiling → Ghami
3,560 m4 h on trail
Trek 4 hours, 12 km. Two passes — Nyi La (4010 m, the only point on the route above 4000 m) and Gami La (3765 m). Beyond Gami — a long mani wall with carved stones, more than 300 metres — the largest in Mustang.
- Day 9
Ghami → Tsarang
3,580 m8 h on trail
Trek 7–8 hours, 11 km. Dhakmar — a village set amid red cliffs, said by legend to be stained by the blood of a demoness defeated by Padmasambhava. Ghar Gompa — one of the oldest monasteries of the Kagyu school in the region. Tsarang — the ancient seat of the kings of Lo, a 15th-century dzong with an active monastery.
- Day 10
Tsarang → Lo Manthang
3,840 m4 h on trail
Short trek 3–4 hours, 14 km, or jeep. Entry into Lo Manthang — the walled capital of the kingdom of Lo. Approximately 600 people live here; the royal palace stands four storeys high, built in clay and timber, 15th century, serving as the residence of King Jigme Palbar Bista until 2008, and as the family's residence since the abolition of the monarchy in Nepal. Accommodation in the best available guesthouse (3 options; premium category is limited).
- Day 11
Lo Manthang: monasteries and Chhoser sky caves
3,840 m6 h on trail
Day excursion to the Chhoser (Sky Caves) cave complex — approximately 12 km north of Lo Manthang. These are multi-storey cave systems cut into the cliffs, dated to the 2nd–13th centuries; archaeological research has been ongoing since 2007, with human remains, manuscripts, and frescoes discovered. Access is by permit with a local guide; entry may be restricted in certain areas for conservation reasons. Return to Lo Manthang; visit to three principal monasteries: Namgyal Gompa, Thubchen Gompa (15th century, frescoes restored by the American Himalayan Foundation), Jampa Lakhang.
- Day 12
Lo Manthang → Ghiling (eastern route)
3,820 m7 h on trail
Return by an alternative route, approximately 7 hours, 22 km. The eastern trail passes through the villages of Dhi and Yantra and does not retrace the outward path. Night stop in Ghiling.
- Day 13
Ghiling → Jomsom → Pokhara
2,700 m
Jeep to Jomsom (3 hours, subject to season), morning flight to Pokhara. Free time in Pokhara — Lake Phewa, dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants. Night stop in Pokhara.
- Day 14
Pokhara → Kathmandu → departure
1,400 m
Morning flight or jeep drive to Kathmandu (7 hours, 200 km). Depending on flight timing — farewell lunch, transfer to the airport.

What you need to know before the route
Physical requirements
The route imposes no extreme demands, but this is not light hiking.
What end participants must be able to do
Walk 4–8 hours a day on mountain dirt trails carrying a day pack of 5–7 kg.
Ascend 600–800 m of elevation gain in a day without signs of serious breathlessness at rest.
Sleep 7 consecutive nights at altitudes of 3000–3840 m.
Tolerate moderate dehydration and significant solar radiation.
On altitude sickness
The maximum altitude of 3840 m is the lower boundary of "high altitude" according to the International Society for Mountain Medicine classification. Mild AMS symptoms occur in 10–25% of participants with no prior altitude experience; moderate forms in fewer than 5%. HACE / HAPE at this altitude are rare but possible. Diamox is discussed individually with a physician.
Who the route is not suitable for
Pregnant women from the 2nd trimester onward.
Persons with uncontrolled hypertension, coronary artery disease, severe COPD, or unstable asthma.
Those with no altitude experience above 2500 m and without a medical examination 4–6 weeks before departure.
Age 70+ — assessed individually, based on a physician's conclusion specifying the planned altitude of 3840 m.
The partner is required to send end clients a medical questionnaire before booking. The template is available in three languages (EN / RU / ZH).
Equipment
The DMC does not sell or rent equipment on the route, except sleeping bags (on request, $5/day).
Essential
Trekking boots with a membrane and ankle support, broken in.
Sleeping bag rated to −5 °C comfort.
Membrane jacket and trousers (wind and dust protection).
Light down jacket or warm fleece.
Base layers — two sets, wool or synthetic.
Fleece gloves + spare pair.
Sunglasses with UV protection category 3.
SPF 50 sunscreen for face and lips.
1 L water bottle + 0.5 L thermos.
Personal first-aid kit (ibuprofen, Diamox as advised by physician, anti-diarrheal, rehydration salts, plasters, chronic medications).
Recommended
Telescopic trekking poles (2).
Headlamp + spare batteries.
Day pack 30–35 L + rain cover.
Trekking socks × 3 pairs + warm socks × 2.
Buff or bandana against dust in the upper Kali Gandaki valley.
Wet wipes, toilet paper.
Universal plug adapter (type C/D/M).
Optional
Powerbank 10000+ mAh — lodge charging is paid (NPR 200–500).
Book, playlist — evenings are long.
Small-denomination notes ($1, $5, $10) for tips and local purchases.
Altitude regime
The route climbs to 3840 m. Above 2500 m the body acclimatizes more slowly: pressure drops and there is 25–40% less oxygen. We schedule altitude gain to stay under 500 m per day above 3000 m and include acclimatization days.
Evacuation
The guide carries a link to Nepali rescue services and the insurance assistance line. The guide decides on evacuation at the first signs of acute mountain sickness (AMS) or injury. Each participant must hold insurance covering high-altitude evacuation up to 3840 m.
Before the trip
- Insurance covering high-altitude evacuation
- Medical clearance from a physician
- At least 4 weeks of cardio preparation
- Personal first-aid kit (we'll discuss the contents)

FAQ
A DMC (Destination Management Company) is a locally licensed operator providing full ground handling for foreign partners. You, as a tour operator / MICE agency / retreat brand, sell to the end client under your own brand and communicate with them directly; we handle everything that takes place between arrival in Kathmandu and the return departure. In DMC mode we have no storefront for the end client — we remain deliberately invisible behind your brand.
Minimum — 4 persons (fewer makes no sense given the fixed costs of permits and transport). Maximum per group — 16 persons; beyond that, manageability is lost in the narrow streets of Lo Manthang. For requests of 20+ participants we split into two parallel groups with staggered schedules and an expanded guide team.
We invoice the partner at a net rate (our cost base plus DMC operating margin). The partner adds their own margin when selling to the end client. Net rate for the 14-day programme in the standard category — from $1,850 per participant for groups of 8+; superior — from $2,450; premium — from $3,450. The final quotation is fixed after agreeing on dates, accommodation, and options. A discount of 8–12% applies for volume exceeding 40 pax per season.
At the application stage — participants' passport details, medical questionnaires using our template, copies of insurance policies. Ten business days before departure — the final manifest, passport copies showing at least 6 months' validity after the return date and two blank spreads, and two 4×6 photographs of each participant for the permit.
Yes, this is the base case for tailoring. All three named components are in our active portfolio, and we regularly assemble hybrid programmes — Mustang 8 days + Panorama Inn 4-day retreat, or Lumbini 2 days + Mustang 10 days. Customisation carries no surcharge for personalisation as such — only the actual difference in logistics.
We operate as an invisible operator. We do not appear in any materials presented to the end client. Briefings are led by your tour leader or our guide acting on your behalf, as agreed. Welcome and farewell dinners may include your branded materials (certificates, souvenirs — we assist with local production). The sole exception: a guide badge on the route, required by Nepal's Ministry of Tourism, must bear the name of the licensed operator — this is a legal requirement that cannot be circumvented.
Over the past 4 seasons across our Mustang programmes (approximately 380 participants in total): 6 early withdrawals from the route (4 due to gastrointestinal infection, 2 due to foot injury), 1 helicopter evacuation (moderate AMS on day 3 in a participant with undiagnosed hypertension), 0 fatalities. All evacuation costs were covered by participants' insurance.
Standard SLA: in the event of DMC failure through our fault (for example, failure to obtain a permit on time) — full refund of the net rate plus compensation for the partner's documented costs up to $5,000. In cases of force majeure (weather-related flight cancellation, political closure of the region, natural disaster) — refund of the portion actually unrecoverable (we do not profit from force majeure, but we do not absorb losses already passed to suppliers). Specific wording is set out in the standard contract, which we send following the initial introductory meeting.
